One thing about Grace Through Fire Mercantile is we care a lot about helping others. We especially have a soft spot for NICU families. After our own nearly 6 months in the NICU, my family knows first hand the financial strain it can take, during and after the hospital stay.
Because of this, we have launched this fundraiser for a sweet family, local to Knoxville. Little Rockwell, Rocky as he is known, was born at the end of May with a very severe congenital heart defect, CHD. Knowing he had a CHD, mom was sent to Nashville from Knoxville to have the beautiful boy. This is nearly 200 miles ONE WAY! Since his birth, he has already had 3 heart surgeries, one being a transplant! Only a month into the NICU stay, and an unknown amount of time left, this family has been constant with him. Eventually, however, at least one parent will go back to work, and that means back to Knoxville even if Rocky isn’t discharged. When this happens driving to and from will increase, and all the expenses that come with that. Additionally, even when Rocky is sent home, there will be plenty of doctor follow ups, and this may include Nashville trips.
Once a baby with special needs is home, the financial strain doesn’t stop. There are the typical baby expenses, but with extra needs comes extra equipment. This early in his NICU journey, it is unknown what needs he will go home with. At Grace Through Fire, my wish is to raise enough funds the family has nothing to worry about for now, and for at least the first expenses when they get home.
